Eema Care Centre: A 50 kWp Off-Grid Solar System for 24/7 Healthcare in Uganda
When healthcare needs to run around the clock, reliable electricity isn't optional.
Eema Care Centre, a not-for-profit healthcare facility opening in Soroti City, Uganda, is preparing to provide 24/7 maternity care, emergency treatment and laboratory services. To support these critical services from day one, the facility partnered with AM Power for a 50 kWp off-grid solar system with 100 kWh of battery storage.
The system is designed to provide reliable, independent power while supporting the facility's expected growth.
The Challenge
Eema Care Centre will provide essential healthcare services at all hours, including maternity and emergency care. These services depend on a consistent power supply, yet grid instability remains a challenge in the region.
For Eema Care, relying solely on the grid was not an option.
The facility needed an energy solution that could operate independently, provide reliable power day and night, and support its growing energy needs as patient volumes increase.
The Solution
AM Power began with a detailed assessment of the facility's expected energy requirements.
The initial assessment estimated an average daily load of approximately 45 kWh. However, because consumption is expected to increase as the healthcare centre becomes fully operational and patient numbers grow, the system was designed with additional capacity to accommodate future demand.
The result is a 50 kWp off-grid solar PV system paired with a 100 kWh battery energy storage system, delivered as a complete turnkey solution.
The solar system generates power during the day, while the battery stores excess energy for use when solar generation is unavailable. Operating independently from the grid, the system gives Eema Care greater control over its energy supply and reduces exposure to grid outages.
The Impact
The system is projected to deliver a 3.9-year payback period while avoiding approximately 30 metric tonnes of CO₂ emissions annually.
More importantly, it provides Eema Care with a reliable energy foundation designed around the realities of 24/7 healthcare.
As the facility opens its doors, its power system is already designed to support both its immediate needs and future growth.
Why It Matters
For many businesses, unreliable power means interruptions, downtime and additional operating costs.
For a healthcare facility, the stakes are much higher.
Reliable electricity supports essential services such as maternity care, emergency treatment, laboratory diagnostics and other critical medical operations. By investing in an off-grid solar and battery solution, Eema Care Centre is building energy resilience into its operations from the start.
It is a reminder that solar isn't only about generating clean energy. In the right setting, it can help make essential services more reliable, resilient and accessible.
