“Why Would You Not Do Solar?” DPI's 170 kWp Solar Solution.

For Digital Packaging Innovation Holdings Limited (DPI), sustainability has always been at the heart of the business solar was the natural next step in the journey.

In August 2026, AM Power Solar completed a 170kWp grid-tied roof top solar system at DPI’s Facilities in Ruiru. This system is designed to support the facility in reducing its grid reliance and support its wider sustainability goals.

As Founder and Managing Director Kunal Chandaria puts it, once he understood what solar could offer his business, the question became simple: “So why would you not do solar?”

Sustainability at the Heart of Operations

“Sustainability is at the heart of our company,” says Kunal.

DPI’s commitment extends beyond its energy supply. The company focuses on reducing waste by printing only what is needed, uses digital printing technology, and encourages its clients to consider recyclable and compostable packaging.

These efforts reflect a wider approach to making packaging production more sustainable.

“I think where we started was already in the sustainable journey,” Kunal explains.

For DPI, solar was a natural next step, allowing the company to build on its existing sustainability efforts while addressing another important business priority: energy costs.

The system is estimated to help avoid 103 t CO₂ per year.

The Push to Go Solar!

Like many business owners, Kunal had been aware of solar for years. He had solar at home and had seen it being used in other countries. Looking at DPI’s rooftop and the amount of sunshine the factory received, he could see the potential.

“So why would you not do solar? But I thought there was a big cost to do it.”

That changed when he met Binyam, AM Power Solar’s CEO, through a shared business networking group. A conversation about business turned into a discussion about solar, and eventually, a project.

AM Power delivered the project as a complete turnkey solution, covering site assessment, 3D system design, procurement, installation, grid connection and commissioning.

The system was integrated with DPI’s existing energy management and generator setup to support solar generation without disrupting factory operations. The DPI staff can now monitor the system remotely 24/7

Results: Electricity Bills Cut by Around Half

The first results are promising.

“We’ve just had a month of full solar use, and I think our bills came to about half of our normal bill,” says Kunal.

For a manufacturer operating energy intensive equipment, this reduction can make a meaningful difference in operational costs.

As the system continues to operate, they will gain a clearer picture of long-term savings and environmental impact from the system

Kunal’s Advice to Other Businesses

To those considering solar, his advice is straightforward: “I think you should go take the journey.”

He highlights three things worth considering:

  • Kenya is made for solar. “We have one of the best climates for solar.”

  • Solar has become more accessible. “Solar has come a long way. It’s affordable, and the technology has kept changing.”

  • Choose the right partner. Equipment is only part of the equation. As Kunal puts it, “Just get a good provider.”

For businesses considering solar, the right partner can help turn an initial idea into a system designed around their energy needs, operations and budget.
